Fauvism movement: Impact of War, and Cultural Influence, “Read here”

Introduction to Fauvism: The Wild Beasts of Art

Fauvism is an expressionistic style of painting. Fauve means wild beast. In 1905 an art critic “Louis Vauxcelles” was greatly affected by the sculpture “Torso of a child made by the sculptor “Marque”. The torso was greatly treated in the manner of the Florentine master, while most of the paintings were the root of the primary colors (red, yellow, blue). The critics remarked that this art movement, Donatello, was among the wild beasts. Social and political circumstances greatly increased due to the continued war and injustice which gave rise to this art movement.

This art style severely affected the public eye due to the agitated theme of this art movement rather than their forerunner. Under the impact of the unsettling and disturbing situation due to the war, the artists during this movement started to make the art of agitation and unsettling. The artist Cézanne had a more constructional scheme whereas Matisse became more abstract in his artwork. If the artist Paul Gauguin had applied large areas of intense colors in his paintings Matisse would have raised the key higher.  The artist Vincent van Gogh used broken streaks of the colors and the expressive forms were transformed by the “Fauve” group into more decorative but still emotionally stimulating sequences of the simplified forms.

Post-Impressionism artists, Matisse, and the Fauvist Evolution of Color

They applied colors straight out of the tubes in such an aggressive and direct manner. During their glorifications, Fauve was known for renewing the traditions whose origins lay deep in the French culture during the Middle Ages, especially in manuscripts and stained glass. They were also influenced by the other cultures that gave them the primary importance of colors like Byzantine, Near Eastern ceramics, and Muslim manuscripts, and their pottery paints also heavily influenced them. Through African sculptures, they have taken the strength of simplification and Wildman. The cultivated art of Persia and their abstract designs were used by the Fauve group.

The Pleasurable life of the French also has a great effect on them. But they were in the time of logical and rational time of period and during no time did their paintings start to be called uncontrolled or unarranged. Unfortunately, this art movement was short-lived and it never achieved its higher artistic status like art movements such as Impressionism or the Nabis movement.

Some of the most important artists of this movement are Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Albert Marquet, Georges Braque, and Georges Braque. Henri Matisse was the most important artist during this movement his most renowned work is the “Dance”.
